For decades, it has been an article of faith for parents of young pitchers: Do not let them throw curveballs. The reason was simple. Contorting elbows — all in the service of ever more competitive baseball at ever younger ages — puts more strain on the joint than arms can handle.


But as the research into the biomechanics of pitching has evolved, the debate has grown more robust, and more perplexing. A recent major study shows curveballs pose no greater risk than that of other pitches. And many studies lately have shown that the greatest threat to young arms is not throwing curves but making too many pitches of any kind.

Every time an athlete steps up to a higher level - whether it's going from a recreational team to a travel team or from 60- or 70-foot bases to a regulation-sized diamond - he or she must leave behind some skills and replace them with new ones in order to compete successfully.
Hundreds of college athletes were asked to think back: "What is your worst memory from playing youth and high school sports?"

Their overwhelming response: "The ride home from games with my parents."

The informal survey lasted three decades, initiated by two former longtime coaches who over time became staunch advocates for the player, for the adolescent, for the child.

When You Should Pay for Baseball Training


Thousands of kids take baseball lessons, clinics, and camps to further their baseball training. This paid instruction is much more necessary now because kids no longer play pickup baseball in the neighborhood as players did when I grew up. Without this neighborhood play, kids often do not have the opportunity to get the baseball training needed to perfect their baseball skills and paying for training is one of the few options for improving.
